In September and October of 1948, the Tucker Corporation needed a facility to evaluate the durability of the Tucker 48 automobile. What better place to complete that testing than the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Tucker 48 numbers 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, 1030, 1031 and 1032 were sent to the track by Preston Tucker who tasked Tucker engineer Eddie Offutt to oversee them. Offutt was the driver of Tucker 1027 when it famously rolled over at 85-90 miles an hour during the testing. What could have been a marketing disaster turned out to be just the opposite; Preston Tucker’s safety innovations, including the pop out windshield, worked flawlessly and proved the forty-eight lived up to the hype. Offutt walked away from the crash with only a bruised elbow.
The shirt was designed by renowned artist Ray Shredhelm and pays homage to both the Tucker 48 testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and to Preston Tucker’s racing history. The front feature the Tucker Symbol of Safety ™ on the left chest and the back features the artists interpretation of what Preston Tucker’s Speed Shop may have looked like in period. The shirt color closely resembles Palamino Beige, the color of car #1028 that participated in Tucker’s durability testing.
The design is screen printed on a two-sided super premium AS Colour Block Unisex 100% cotton crew neck cream t-shirt. Although a bit more expensive than the quality and durability is second to none.
Available in sizes S-3X with a small surcharge for larger sizes. Includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Sean and Mike Tucker, Great-Grandsons of Preston Tucker and owners of Preston Tucker LLC.
